“And you’ve no idea what it was doing there?” Booth asks the foreman of the clean-up crew as Bones sifts through the wreckage of the one-time Percival J. Tanner Federal Building.

The foreman shrugs. “None. I mean, it’s not every day you find body parts in a federal building, right?”

“No,” Booth says, frowning. “No, it’s really not.”

With a sigh, he asks, “You said this building was blown up as part of a scene in a movie?”

“Imploded,” the foreman corrects. “But yeah, they were filming some mummy movie here or something – archaeologists possessed by the spirits or whatever. Sounds pretty stupid, but it made my job easier. Their people rigged the explosives. All I got was the cleanup, which isn’t bad.”

He glances mournfully at Brennan. “Not usually, anyway.”

“So you think the movie people put the body there?”

“Probably. I mean, it’s either that or some U.S. attorney did somebody years ago. This building hasn’t been used for anything for the better part of a decade.”

“Thanks. You’ll call if you think of anything else?”

The foreman nods. “And you’ll call with more questions.”

Booth agrees, then goes off to see what Brennan’s found.

Booth knocks firmly on the door. He’s not exactly dreading this interview, but he’s hardly looking forward to it. Telling people about their deceased loved ones is hardly his favorite thing about this job.

He hears a voice inside yell “Coming!” and he looks sideways at Brennan.

“You ready for this?”

Trina Echolls looks good even when she's being interrogated. The flourescent lights don't do anyone any favors, but she manages to look fresh and pulled together in spite of them.

Booth notes this both as a man (pretty girl!) and investigator (she's being interrogated - why does she look so relaxed?). He watches her for a long moment, wanting to see if he can make her uncomfortable.

The former Pretentious Umlaut doesn't look nearly as relaxed as his one-time wife did, but then, Booth would be surprised if he did. Normal people - even normal people who are rich and famous - rarely feel comfortable in interrogation rooms. It's how things should be, in Booth's world. When they start looking relaxed, he starts thinking they've got something to hide.

It sounds counterintuitive, but it works for Booth.

"So, Mr. Witherspoon, what can you tell me about Trina Echolls' relationship with her stepmother?"

Why dodge the issue?
